When I served as a Mormon missionary some years ago, I realized that many fellow Christians have a lot of misconceptions about what Mormons believe about the Bible. Some believe we don’t care about or use the Bible and others think that the Book of Mormon replaces the Bible in our theology. Having a deep love for the Holy Bible and the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I want to respond to these common questions and assumptions.
What do Mormons consider to be scripture?
Mormons, or members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, consider the Book of Mormon, Bible, Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price to be scripture.
You may have heard of the Book of Mormon. Like the Bible, it contains the writings of ancient prophets; whereas the prophets in the Bible were in the Old World, the prophets in the Book of Mormon were in the ancient Americas. The Doctrine and Covenants contains revelations received by modern-day prophets.
However, to be very clear–neither the Book of Mormon or Doctrine and Covenants replace the Bible in Mormon theology. It is the Word of God and an amazing gift to man.
What version or translation of the Bible do Mormons use?
The King James Version is the translation used in the Mormon Church. If you have a copy of the King James Version and compared it to a Mormon’s Bible, the text of the scriptures is identical.
Is there anything different about the “Mormon Bible” then?
If you examined a Mormon’s Bible, you may notice that there are footnotes at the bottom of each page. To help people in their personal study, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints includes these footnotes to direct the reader to other relevant scriptures. For example, if you were reading about an event in Jesus’ life in Matthew, the footnote may direct you to where the same event is recorded in the other gospels. This enhances personal study and allows individuals to study topic-by-topic, rather than simply reading chronologically.

How do Mormons feel about the Bible?
The Bible has brought me great peace in my life as I’ve studied the simple and pure doctrines of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I believe the Bible, I love the Bible, I cherish the Bible, and I hope that no reader will leave this site without understanding at least that.
If you know a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, ask them what they believe about the Bible. Give them the opportunity to share with you the role that the Bible plays in our theology and in developing our personal relationships with the living God and His Son Jesus Christ.
